Background notes

Archive material and source history

Discofone formed in São Paulo in the early 1980s with Ari Versani on vocals and guitar, Marcos Gerez on vocals and keyboards, Paulo Henrique on bass, and Luiz Calil on drums. Lígia Vendramini later joined on vocals and flute, though she was eventually replaced by Cristina Piñeiro. Their first album came out in 1985, simply titled 'Discofone'.

They released several albums through the late 80s and early 90s, including 'Palavras ao Vento' in 1987 and 'Terceiro Mundo' in 1989. A live recording from Rio's Circo Voador came out in 1992. Their sound pulled from post-punk and new wave while keeping some Brazilian textures, which made them a bit harder to pin down for mainstream radio.

Their song '26 de Junho' became their most recognizable track, though others like 'Desejo em Cartaz' and 'Espaço' have held up too. The band's lyrics often had an introspective, somewhat cryptic quality that drew a dedicated following even as some critics found them too experimental. They put out a compilation called 'Síntese' in 2001.
