Divisão Sonora

Divisão Sonora formed in São Paulo in 1989, with founding members Renato Manfredini on vocals, Ricardo Lima on guitar, Alexandre Camargo on bass, and Fabio Lima on drums. Their early shows in underground clubs and community centers featured lyrics that addressed poverty, inequality, and police brutality, which sometimes drew attention from authorities. The band's debut album, 'Ate Quando?' from 1992, included the protest anthem of the same name.

Their music incorporated elements of punk, reggae, and hip-hop. They worked with artists like Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil. The lineup saw some change when Camargo left in 2002 and was replaced by Bruno Guerrini, though Manfredini and Ricardo Lima remained at the band's creative center. Their outspoken political stance led to criticism and occasional public debate about their lyrics.

Divisão Sonora's songs became associated with social movements in Brazil. They organized concerts for charity and participated in campaigns around issues like racism and police brutality.
