DJ Chernobyl was a band led by Goran Bregovic, a musician who had previously played rock in Sarajevo. In the late 1980s, he started exploring Balkan musical traditions, particularly Gypsy melodies, and formed a group around that interest. Their sound mixed those traditional elements with electronic beats.
Their track "Kukumbia Cigana" became a notable hit, though its explicit lyrics and unconventional style drew some criticism alongside its popularity. Other songs in their catalog include "Lui Resta," "Playboy Pagando de Bandido," and "Surta." They released albums like Gorazde in 1994 and Underground in 1997.
Bregovic was the vocalist and guitarist. The band included Zdravko Colic on vocals, Dragan Ristic on drums, and Nikola Mladenovic on bass. They worked with other artists such as Cesária Évora and Iggy Pop. Their live shows were known for high energy, blending traditional and modern sounds.
