DJ Ratazana came out of Brixton in the mid-1980s with a sound that mixed funk, hip-hop, and electro. Their debut single "Www.com.vc" landed in 1985 and caught on quickly, built around MC Ratty's fast delivery and DJ Lemon's synth programming. The group included bassist O.G. and guitarist Stash, who added rock touches to the electronic foundation.
Their first album, Only One Way, arrived in 1987 and followed up with Get to the Next Level two years later. Songs like "Bate Cabelo" and "Pirataria" showed their knack for danceable grooves with sharp, sometimes political lyrics. They faced some criticism from purists in both funk and hip-hop circles who saw their hybrid style as an oddity.
By 1991 they put out The Return of the Rat, a compilation that gathered earlier material. The band's run was relatively brief, but tracks like "O Boi Não Tava Lá" and "Paixão de Louco" kept turning up in clubs and on pirate radio, holding a place in London's underground dance scene.
