Dm9

Dm9 was a Los Angeles-based musical ensemble with Mindy Smith on lead vocals and songwriting, Dean Tidey on guitar and production, and David Babcock on bass. Their sound leaned toward acoustic arrangements with ethereal harmonies, anchored by Smith's introspective lyrics. They released a self-titled debut album in 2003, followed by the album "The Big Picture" in 2006 and an EP called "Time" in 2008.

In 2005, they put out the single "Sunscreen," which became their most recognizable track. Smith wrote the lyrics as a message to her children, drawing some inspiration from Baz Luhrmann's film "Moulin Rouge!" The song's gentle melody and personal sentiment connected with listeners, though some critics found their overall style too sentimental at times.

Dm9 maintained a devoted following who appreciated their straightforward, emotionally direct approach to folk and alternative music. Their work, particularly songs like "Sunscreen," offered a quiet, reflective space amid louder musical trends of the mid-2000s.
