DML formed in Fortaleza, Brazil in 1993, with MC Cidinho, MC Leonardo, and DJ Guuga at the core. The name stands for Da Melhor Linguagem, which translates to The Best Language. They started performing in local clubs and on street corners when they couldn't afford proper recording equipment.

Their song "Respeito" became a national anthem in Brazil after appearing on their 2000 debut album of the same name. The track's straightforward plea for dignity and equality resonated with people across the country, getting sung at protests and rallies.

DML's lyrics often addressed police brutality, racism, and poverty, which drew criticism from conservative circles while connecting with listeners who felt the group spoke for them. They kept making music that tackled social issues directly, without softening their message.
