Dödelhaie formed in 1987 around guitarist and vocalist Guido "Speppi" Specht, with bassist Peter "Olli" Ollesch and drummer Thomas "Tommi" Schneider in the original lineup. Specht has been the only constant member through various changes over time. They put out their first album in 1989 and followed with records like Angriff in 1991 and Made in Germany in 1993.
Their sound is raw and aggressive, with lyrics that tackle violence and social injustice in blunt terms. The song "Der Chirurg" from their 1995 album of the same name became particularly notorious for its graphic surgical narrative, drawing criticism for what some saw as glorifying brutality. This confrontational approach defined much of their reception.
Later albums included Menschenfresser in 2002 and Unter dem Pflaster liegt der Strand in 2010.
