Dona Zefinha formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1990. The band took its name from the Afro-Brazilian deity Oxum, which reflected their interest in local traditions. Their song "Menino Rei" became particularly well-known, along with tracks like "A Vaia" and "O Penso."
They released their first album in 1991 and put out several more over the following years, including O Samba É Meu Dom in 1994 and Maré Alta in 1997. Early on, some listeners found their mix of traditional rhythms and contemporary approaches either too modern or too traditional, but they kept working.
Marcelo D2 handled guitar and vocals, while Pedro Luís played percussion and sang. Rita Ribeiro was also a vocalist in the group. Their music drew from Afro-Brazilian rhythms without strictly adhering to any one style.
