Downplay was a British rock band from Southend-on-Sea that released four albums between 2002 and 2010. Their self-titled debut came out in 2002, followed by 'A Day in the Sun' the next year, 'A Life on the Run' in 2008, and 'The Distance Between' in 2010. The lineup included Danny Blunden on lead vocals and guitar, Jayce Lewis on guitar and vocals, Stuart Spence on bass, and Matt Davies on drums.
Their song 'The One Who Laughs Last' became their most recognizable track, though it was at the center of plagiarism allegations around the time 'A Day in the Sun' was gaining attention. The band denied the claims. Other songs like 'Waiting On The Sky To Change,' 'Dark On Me,' and 'Hated You From Hello' rounded out their catalog of melodic, introspective rock.
Downplay's music tended toward melancholic themes, with Blunden's vocals and Lewis's guitar work giving their songs an emotional weight. They haven't released new material since 2010, but their albums still find listeners drawn to that particular strain of early-2000s British rock.
