Downset

Downset formed in Los Angeles in 1989 with vocalist Rey Oropeza, guitarists Brian Mantia and Tony Garcia, bassist Roy Turner, and drummer Chris Lee. Their sound pulled from hardcore punk and hip-hop rhythms, which gave their early material a distinct edge. The band's debut album in 1994 included the track 'Anger!', a straightforward burst of energy that became one of their most recognizable songs.

They released three more studio albums over the next decade, with 1999's 'Check Your People' addressing police brutality and racial inequality. After 2004's 'Universal', which was produced by Ross Robinson, the group disbanded. They reunited in 2019 with the original lineup and have performed since then.

Downset's lyrics often dealt with social justice and frustration, delivered with a direct, confrontational style. Songs like 'Blackest Of Days' and 'About to blast' carried that same intensity. Their music avoided polish in favor of a raw, urgent feel that connected with listeners who shared their discontent.
