Archive material and source history

Downward was a German post-industrial band active in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their first album, Glasshouse, came out in 1988 and gave its name to one of their best-known tracks. They followed it with Quartered in 1989 and Into the Grey in 1990.

Their music combined electronic programming with guitar and keyboards, creating what some described as haunting, immersive soundscapes. Robert Lippok handled vocals and guitar, while Christoph H. Müller programmed keyboards. Michael Mertens played guitar and keyboards, and Axel Reinemer was on drums.

Songs like Glasshouse and Line showed their style: ethereal melodies layered over industrial rhythms, with lyrics that leaned toward existential themes. They put out Psycho Disco in 1992 and Epistrophe in 1994, then returned after a break with SubHuman in 2001.

While they developed a cult following in experimental music circles, their work sometimes drew criticism for its dark, introspective tone. They kept a fairly low profile, letting the music speak for itself.
