Doxa Rap

Doxa Rap came together in Amadora, a suburb of Lisbon, in the late 1980s. The group included Maze, Bob Da Rage Sense, and DJ Snake. They were listening to American acts like Public Enemy and N.W.A., but they were writing about what they saw around them in Portugal.

Their first album, "Mundo Louco," came out in 1993. The record dealt plainly with poverty, racism, and police violence. It connected with listeners who recognized those conditions, and it established a template for Portuguese hip-hop that was grounded in local reality rather than imported style.

Later albums like "Vidas Cruzadas," "Eu Sou Hip-Hop," and "Nação Hip-Hop" followed. The group's straightforward, socially conscious approach sometimes put them at odds with authorities, and certain songs were kept off the radio. They kept working anyway.
