The Dramatics formed in Detroit in the late 1960s with Ron Banks, Willie Ford, Anthony Thomas, Elbert Mooney, and Larry Demps. They signed with Volt Records, a Stax subsidiary, in 1968. Their 1968 single 'Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get' reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart.

Their song 'In The Rain' became one of their best-known tracks. The group went through several lineup changes in the early 1970s, with Lenny Mayes replacing Mooney and L.J. Reynolds taking over when Banks left. They had a legal dispute with Stax Records in 1973 that affected their release schedule.

Despite the changes and challenges, they kept recording through the 1970s. Their catalog includes songs like 'Hey You! Get off My Mountain' and 'Be My Girl' that maintained their soul vocal group sound.
