Dream Academy formed in the early 1980s around Nick Laird-Clowes, who worked with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour on their debut. Their 1985 self-titled album included 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,' which became a hit with its sparse arrangements and melancholy tone.
That debut established their sound, minimalist pop with hints of composers like Steve Reich and Brian Eno. They followed it with songs like '(Johnny) New Light' and 'Ballad 4/4,' keeping the same introspective mood through the late '80s.
Gilmour left the band in 1989, but Dream Academy kept recording into the 1990s and 2000s. Their later work stayed quiet and atmospheric, never quite matching the reach of that first album.
