Drie Hoog Achter

Drie Hoog Achter formed in the late 1970s with Theo van Es on vocals and guitar, Maarten van Praag on bass, and Hans van der Spek on drums. Their debut album 'De Kamer Draait' came out in 1980, and that title track became something of an anthem at the time. They put out six studio albums through 1991, including 'Smerige Jeans' and 'Over' in the early 1980s.

Their music had a raw, intense quality, and van Es's lyrics often dealt with difficult subjects like depression and substance abuse. Songs like 'Dodelijk Geraakt' and 'Het Doet Pijn' carried that direct, sometimes confrontational tone. The band's sound stayed fairly consistent through those six records, built around that core trio.

They worked with a few other musicians along the way, like guitarist Jan Eijgendaal and keyboardist Ronald Kool on some recordings. The group's straightforward approach to Dutch rock, with its unvarnished lyrics and driving arrangements, found an audience that appreciated its lack of polish.
