Drift Five formed in São Paulo in 1997 with Gustavo Ruiz on vocals, Ricco Viana on guitar, Julinho Vergueiro on bass, Renato Tribuzy on keyboards, and Fabiano Negri on drums. Their debut album 'Ameixa' came out in 1999, and its lead single '...O Resto É Silêncio' became a hit in Brazil. The song's themes of love and loss seemed to connect with listeners, and the album earned them some awards, including the Prêmio Multishow for Best Group in 2000.
Their sound mixed rock and pop with Brazilian folk elements, creating something that felt distinct from other bands at the time. Other tracks like 'Apenas Eu' and 'Conexão' showed their range, moving between moody ballads and more driving arrangements. In 2008, keyboardist Renato Tribuzy left and was replaced by Pedro Coelho.
Around 2001, there were accusations that they had plagiarized a song from another artist, which the band denied. A few years later, former bassist Julinho Vergueiro publicly criticized the band's management, saying the members weren't being fairly compensated by their label.
