Editor's note

Drowning Pool's heavy Dallas sound and hard road

The Texas metal band behind 'Bodies' kept playing through lineup changes and tragedy.

If you only know 'Bodies,' check out 'Drop' from that same debut. It's all there, the heavy groove, the attitude, the sound that got them signed.

When 'Bodies' hit in 2001, that chugging riff and Dave Williams' raw shout became a metal anthem for a generation. The track still shows up in video games and wrestling events years later. Even with later songs like 'Hate' and 'Racing To a Redlight,' that debut energy is what people remember.

They started in Dallas in 1996 with Williams on vocals. After his death in 2002, they brought in Jason Jones and kept making albums like 'Desensitized' and 'Full Circle' through the 2000s.

Drowning Pool formed in Dallas in 1996 with Dave Williams on vocals, C.J. Pierce on guitar, Stevie Benton on bass, and Mike Luce on drums. Their debut album 'Sinner' came out in 2001 and included the track 'Bodies,' which became their most recognizable song. That aggressive, riff-heavy sound got them a deal with Eleven Seven Music.

In August 2002, Williams died from heart failure at age 30. The band continued with Jason Jones as vocalist and released 'Desensitized' in 2004. They put out several more albums over the next decade, including 'Full Circle' in 2007 and 'Resilience' in 2013.
