Archive material and source history

The D-Tones formed in Santos in 1984 with Roberto Frejat on guitar and vocals, Renato Rocha on bass, Carlos Coelho on keyboards, and Marcelo Bonfá on drums. Their self-titled debut came out in 1985, but it was their second album, 1987's "Por Que Não?," that really put them on the map. That record included "Alguém Como Você," a ballad that became their signature song and a staple of Brazilian pop radio.

Frejat left the band in 1990 to go solo, which changed their sound and lineup. They kept recording through the decade, putting out albums like "Pela Vida" in 1990 and an acoustic set in 1995. Other songs like "Aquelas Noites (Sem Sushi)" and "Ficar de Madrugada" show the lighter, more playful side of their catalog, but it's "Alguém Como Você" that most people remember.

They marked their 15th anniversary with a compilation in 2000. The D-Tones' music, especially that big hit, still gets played and covered in Brazil, though the original four-piece lineup hasn't been active for years.
