Dubas Marie

Dubas Marie formed in 1978, led by vocalist Aïda Samb. They came up in Senegal during a time when resources were thin, but they kept working on songs that spoke plainly about where they were from. Their 1985 recording 'Ce soir, je pense à mon pays' became something of a national touchstone, a straightforward expression of homesickness that connected with people.

That song's success brought them wider attention, but also some friction. Their lyrics sometimes addressed social issues, which drew criticism from certain quarters. They weren't the only group doing this, but it became part of their story. The band's core included Pape Fall on guitar, Massamba Fall on bass, and Moustapha Faye on percussion.

Their other songs, like 'J' suis bête' and 'Le doux caboulot', show a different side, less explicitly political, more personal or observational. They worked for decades, blending Senegalese rhythms with other sounds, but that early period around 'Ce soir, je pense à mon pays' is what most listeners remember.
