Dubby formed in Rio de Janeiro around 2002, when they put out their first album, Aluno Aplicado. The title track caught on and gave the band some national attention. Their music mixed reggae with Brazilian sounds, which felt natural coming from Rio.
They kept recording through the 2000s, with albums like Nação Regueira in 2004 and O Grito da Periferia in 2008. Songs like Ilegítimos and Paisagem Urbana came from that period. The band worked with other Brazilian reggae acts like Natiruts and Cidade Negra, and their sound picked up some hip-hop and funk along the way.
Marcus Daniel sang lead for the group. They had a few run-ins with critics over their lyrics, and there was some talk about a plagiarism claim in 2007, but it didn't stick. By 2012 they'd released Sem Censura, and tracks like Papai Noel Drogado and Play Liso showed they were still writing.
