DYS formed in Boston in 1982 with Dave Smalley on vocals, Jonathan Anastas on guitar, Kevin Klein on bass, and George Hurley on drums. They played the city's dive bars and clubs, developing a sound that was both aggressive and melodic within the hardcore scene. Their debut album 'Brotherhood of the Snake' came out in 1983 and found an audience among hardcore listeners.
They followed with albums like 'With No Authority' in 1985 and 'Wolfpack' in 1987. The lineup shifted over time; Smalley left in 1986 and was replaced by John Brannon, while Anastas departed in 1987 with Dave Robinson taking over guitar.
DYS broke up in 1993. Afterward, Smalley worked with bands like Dag Nasty, All, and Down by Law, and Anastas collaborated with musicians including Paul Westerberg and Grant Hart. Their records, particularly early ones, remain part of the hardcore conversation.
