Archive material and source history
E Agora, Zé? formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1980, led by Zé Renato on vocals and guitar. The group included Rosalvo Aguiar on drums, Joãozinho Caldas on bass, and Lauro Faria on keyboards. Their first album came out in 1983, followed by records like 'Balaio do Samba' in 1985 and 'Zé do Caixão' in 1989.
Their 1986 album 'A Barba Mudou de Cor' gave them wider attention, with the title track becoming one of their best-known songs. Other tracks like 'Mal Passado' and 'Teimoso' show their mix of samba and rock with some experimental touches. They kept recording through the 1990s and early 2000s, putting out 'Mural da Praça' in 1992 and 'Quando Amanhece' in 2002.
The band stopped playing together around 2005 but got back together for shows in 2017. Their music, with its straightforward lyrics and unpolished sound, has kept a following in Brazil without ever becoming a mainstream commercial force.
