E.S.S.A. formed in São Paulo in 1994. Their name comes from the song 'Erva Santa Sem Amônia,' which would later give its title to their debut album. The band's sound mixed rock, reggae, and hip-hop from the start, which earned them a small but dedicated following in the city.
That debut album arrived in 2003. The title track's lyrics about police and drug laws caused enough of a stir that some radio stations wouldn't play it.
Their lineup changed often, but vocalist Dudu Azevedo remained a constant presence. The music kept evolving, touching on funk and electronic sounds while staying rooted in their earlier style. In 2015, their song 'Nação Zumbi' appeared on the soundtrack for the film 'Aquarius,' which brought their music to listeners outside Brazil.
