E-town Concrete

E-Town Concrete formed in East London during the mid-1990s, with Ryan Kirby on vocals, Max Dawson on guitar and production, and James Carter on drums. Their debut album 'Mandibles' came out in 1998, featuring the title track that became something of an underground anthem. The band's sound mixed hip-hop, electronic, and industrial elements, with Kirby's lyrics often turning inward on themes of identity and alienation.

They followed 'Mandibles' with three more albums: 'The Bleeding Edge' in 2002, 'Hollow' in 2007, and 'Vertigo' in 2014. Songs like '4 The Fame' and 'A Father's Marathon' show the range of their work, from aggressive to more vulnerable moments. Kirby's personal struggles with substance abuse and mental health sometimes surfaced in the music, giving it a raw, introspective edge.

Their experimental approach didn't always sit easily with critics or label expectations, but they kept at it for two decades. The band's live shows were known for their intensity, driven by Carter's drumming and Kirby's commanding presence. They never really fit into one category, which made them hard to pin down but interesting to follow for those drawn to that kind of hybrid sound.
