Earl Scruggs was born in North Carolina in 1924. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he met guitarist Lester Flatt in 1945, and they formed the duo Flatt and Scruggs. Their sound helped define what became known as bluegrass music.
Scruggs developed a three-finger banjo picking style that became influential.
Flatt and Scruggs parted ways in 1969 but reunited in 1971. After Flatt's death in 1979, Scruggs continued performing and recording on his own, releasing albums like "Bluegrass Instrumentals" in 1974.
