Editor's note

The Easybeats, Australia's first rock export

A Sydney band that broke through with 'Friday on My Mind' before personal struggles took their toll.

For the full picture, listen to 'Friday on My Mind' and then 'She's So Fine.' That's their range right there.

They were the first Australian rock band to score an international hit with 'Friday on My Mind,' a song that still sounds fresh today. Their blend of rhythm and blues with pop hooks on tracks like 'She's So Fine' showed what Australian rock could do when it got heard. Even with radio stations favoring British and American acts, they managed to cut through.

Formed in Sydney in the mid-1960s with Stevie Wright on vocals and George Young on guitar. They recorded songs like 'I'll Make You Happy' and built recognition abroad before Wright's heroin addiction in 1969 marked a difficult period.

The Easybeats formed in Sydney in the mid-1960s, with Stevie Wright on vocals, George Young on rhythm guitar, Harry Vanda on lead guitar, Dick Diamonde on bass, and Gordon Fleet on drums. Their song 'Friday on My Mind' became a hit internationally. George Young's younger brother Malcolm would later join AC/DC.

They recorded songs like 'She's So Fine' and 'I'll Make You Happy' that blended rhythm and blues with pop and rock. Australian radio stations at the time often preferred British and American acts, which made it harder for them to get airplay locally.

In 1969, Stevie Wright developed a heroin addiction that affected the band. They had already achieved recognition abroad by then, but this marked a difficult period for them.
