Eater came out of Los Angeles in the late 1970s. They were part of that city's punk scene, though their version was particularly raw and confrontational. The band's lineup included Brian Goetz on vocals, Derrick Bostrom on guitar, Otto Ozz on bass, and Jon Wahl on drums.
Their music wasn't always easy for clubs to book. Goetz's lyrics dealt with things like addiction and violence, and their song 'Lock It Up' took direct aim at police brutality. That kind of material could get a reaction, both from audiences and from authorities.
They put out a few records between 1979 and 1983, starting with their self-titled debut and including 'The Album' and 'Berserker'. The sound was aggressive and stripped-down, a style that would later get called hardcore punk.
