Ecomoni

Ecomoni formed in the early 1990s as a collective of musicians interested in experimental music and environmental themes. The name combines "economy" and "ecology," which gives you a sense of their focus. Their lineup included Victoria Lukas on vocals and accordion, Matthew Azevedo on guitar and bass, Ryan Packard on drums, Maria Kiraly on cello, and Toby Malaki handling electronics.

Their music pulls from folk, jazz, classical, and electronic elements, but it's hard to pin down to one style. They've used field recordings and recycled materials in their work, creating soundscapes that reflect natural environments. Songs like "Eco No Waltz" and "Help!! ~Ecomoni No Acchii Chikyuu Wo Samasun Da" show their approach to blending music with environmental messaging.

They released albums like Echo No Waltz in 1995, The Sea is Sick in 1999, and The Hidden Life of Cities in 2005. Their work sometimes drew criticism for being too direct about its themes, but it found an audience among listeners who shared their concerns about climate change and sustainability.

Beyond recording, Ecomoni has been involved in environmental activism, performing at rallies and working with groups like the Rainforest Action Network. Their 2010 album The People's Forest came out of that collaboration, drawing inspiration from Amazonian indigenous communities.
