Ed Ames was born Edmond Dantes Urick in Denver, Colorado. His father played violin, and his mother liked folk and country music, which gave him an early mix of sounds to draw from.

He signed with RCA Records in 1958 and had some success, but it was his 1962 recording of 'My Cup Runneth Over' that really connected with people. He also recorded tracks like 'Apologize' and 'Son Of a Travellin' Man' during this period.

In the 1970s, Ames got tangled in a legal fight over who owned the master recordings of his hits. He was also involved with Scientology, which brought some criticism his way. He was married twice, first to Mary Jane Revell and later to actress Joanie Sommers, and had five children.
