The high voice behind Motown classics who carved his own path with songs like "Get Ready."
For the group sound, listen to "I Wish It Would Rain." For his solo side, "Get Ready" or "Boogie down" give you the idea.
That falsetto on "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" helped make The Temptations' sound what it was. After leaving the group, he proved he could carry his own with solo hits like "Get Ready" and the Ashford & Simpson-penned "Day by Day," which topped the R&B chart in 1972. You still hear his voice on both sides of that split.
He was there from the start, joining The Temptations in 1961. He left in 1971 and spent the rest of the decade putting out solo albums like "Boogie Down" and "Love Keys."
