Editor's note

Eddy Christiani, the Dutch guitarist who found his sound in wartime Indonesia.

A Dutch singer and guitarist whose 1956 hit "'k Zal blij zijn als 't weer zondag is" became a national favorite.

For a quick sense of his style, try "'k Zal blij zijn als 't weer zondag is" and "Carnaval met jou". They're both straightforward, melodic, and very much of their time.

Christiani's music is a piece of Dutch postwar life. His 1956 song "'k Zal blij zijn als 't weer zondag is" topped the charts and stuck around for years. Tracks like "Als op Capri de rozentuinen bloeien" and "Carnaval met jou" became familiar radio sounds for a generation.

He started playing guitar while stationed in Indonesia with the Dutch army during World War II. Back in the Netherlands, he formed The Melody Strings and performed steadily. He kept playing with musicians like Bertus Borgers and Greetje Kauffeld until his death in 1986.
