In 1971, they released a debut album called "Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis," which mixed rock, samba, and African rhythms. Their lyrics sometimes touched on social and political themes, which drew attention from Brazil's military government at the time.

Later on, they collaborated with Herbie Hancock on "Aquarela do Brasil" and played festivals like Montreux and Newport.
