The Edgar Broughton Band came up in the late 1960s, a British rock trio with Edgar Broughton on vocals and guitar, his brother Steve on drums, and Arthur Grant on bass. They put out records like 'Edgar Broughton Band' in 1969 and 'Sing Brother Sing' the following year, working a rough mix of blues and rock that felt a bit ahead of its time. Their live shows were known for being loose and theatrical, with plenty of improvisation.

Songs like 'Evening Over Rooftops' and 'Apache Drop Out' had a raw, driving quality, distorted guitars, a heavy bassline, Edgar's raspy delivery. The sound wasn't always tidy, and it rubbed some critics the wrong way, but it connected with listeners who were drawn to its energy and directness. Lyrically, they touched on social unease and everyday restlessness, which gave tracks like 'Things on My Mind' and 'Call Me a Liar' an edge.

They kept recording into the mid-1970s with albums such as 'Inside Out' and 'Bandages', though their approach remained stubbornly their own. Over time, that unpolished, aggressive style would be noted by some later punk acts, but the Broughton Band's records mostly stand as their own particular strain of British rock from that era.
