Edgar de Souza came up in Salvador, Bahia, a place where axé, samba-reggae, and Afro-Brazilian music are part of the air. He put out his first album in 1994, and the single 'Bahia Meu Deus do Céu' caught on nationally, giving him a solid footing in Brazilian pop.
His records from the late '90s and early 2000s, like 'Eu Vou' and 'Sá Marina', show him folding in funk and soul touches while keeping the Bahian rhythms central. Songs like 'Saudade Da Bahia' and 'O Sertanejo Chora' from his catalog are built on that same regional feel, straightforward and melodic.
There was a plagiarism claim around 2003 concerning a track called 'Melodia do Sentimento', but it didn't really stick. He kept recording and performing with a regular band that included backing vocalist Cátia de França and keyboardist Nilson Jr.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
