Background notes

Archive material and source history

Edgar Freire was born in 1957 in Salvador, Bahia, where he grew up hearing the local rhythms of samba and axé. He started writing songs early and joined the band Bamdamel in the early 1980s. His solo debut album 'Edgar' came out in 1988, but it was the 1991 release of 'Eu Sou Nação' that really connected with people across Brazil.

That song became something of an anthem, with lyrics that spoke to national identity and unity. Freire's music often carried a social message, and his support for causes like the Landless Workers' Movement sometimes put him at odds with authorities. He kept recording through the 1990s with albums like 'De Pés No chão' and 'O Baile'.

He worked with musicians like percussionist Márcio Vitor and guitarist Luiz Caldas in his band, which he called A Nação. Other songs like 'Além do Rio Azul' and 'Gênesis' show the range of his writing, from spiritual themes to straightforward celebration. Freire's voice remained one that many Brazilians recognized, even when his positions weren't universally popular.
