Archive material and source history

Edgar Winter was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1946 and started playing saxophone as a child, influenced by his older brother Johnny Winter. He formed the Edgar Winter Group in 1970, and their self-titled debut album came out the following year. That record included 'Dying To Live,' a ballad that became one of their better-known songs.

Winter's band put out several albums in the early to mid-1970s, including They Only Come Out at Night and Shock Treatment. Their sound mixed blues, rock, and funk, with Winter's saxophone and vocals at the front. Another track, 'On The Tip Of My Tongue,' also appeared among his work from that period.

Winter dealt with addiction issues and was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in 1977. After that, he went through what's been described as a spiritual change in his life and music.
