Edir Carneiro

Edir Carneiro came from a farm in the sertão of Bahia, where he grew up hearing the cantigas and forró rhythms that would later shape his music. In 1978, he released his debut album 'Canto, Sertão e Poesia,' with the title track becoming something of a regional anthem for the Brazilian countryside.

His songs often dealt with social issues, which sometimes drew criticism alongside praise. He worked with musicians like Elba Ramalho on 'Moça' and Marizélia on 'Sem Nexo,' and his catalog includes tracks like 'Canudos (O Hoje)' and 'Luz do Mar' that reflect his connection to the sertão landscape and its people.

Carneiro kept recording through the 1980s and 1990s with albums like 'O Segredo da Luz' and 'Coração do Nordeste,' maintaining a focus on the region's traditions without becoming a mainstream commercial figure. His music stayed grounded in the particular textures of Bahia rather than chasing broader trends.
