Edivaldo Mattos was a Brazilian singer born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947. He recorded a version of "American Pie" that became widely known, though the details around his career remain somewhat unclear.
His recording of Don McLean's song brought him international attention in the early 1970s. He also had a song called "Tenho Pena" in his catalog.
Mattos worked with American record producer Jim Reeves, who brought him to New York to record. The resulting album came out in 1971 under his own name.
He developed a reputation for being outspoken about social and political issues, which sometimes created tension alongside his musical work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
