Editor's note

Edu Lobo, a quiet force in Brazilian song

For a good sense of his range, put on 'Canto Triste' and then 'Chovendo Na Roseira'. They're both him, just different shades.

His songs have a way of sticking with you, whether it's the gentle sway of 'Ave rara' or the rhythmic pulse of 'Cidade Nova'. He wrote 'Ciclo sem fim' for The Lion King, which brought his sound to a global stage. But his work with filmmaker Ruy Guerra on 'Terra em Transe' in the late '60s shows he was shaping Brazilian music long before that.

He started writing songs at fourteen in Rio. By 1967 he was recording albums like 'Canta Edu Lobo', and later pieces like 'O Grande Circo Místico' in 1983. You can hear shifts in his sound across those years, from the early 'Jogo de Roda' to the '90s Disney nomination.

Archive material and source history

Edu Lobo was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1943 and started writing songs when he was fourteen. He worked with filmmaker Ruy Guerra on the soundtrack for 'Terra em Transe' in the late 1960s, which brought him some early attention.

His songs like 'Jogo de Roda' and 'Estrada Branca' show his feel for melody and rhythm. He recorded albums including 'Canta Edu Lobo' in 1967, 'Brevemente' in 1972, and 'O Grande Circo Místico' in 1983. Musicians like guitarist Luiz Bonfá and bassist Ron Carter played on his records at different times.

In the 1990s, he wrote 'Ciclo sem fim' for Disney's The Lion King, which was nominated for an Academy Award. That song introduced his work to a much wider international audience. Other pieces like 'Zum-zum' and 'Cidade Nova' have remained part of the Brazilian songbook.
