Seit Ende der 40-er Jahre wurde in Majak das Plutonium für die Sowiet-Russischen Nuklarraketen hergestellt.
Dabei fielen große Mengen Flüssiger Abfälle an.
Man lagerte sie in speziellen Tanks auf dem Werksgelände.
Als bei einem dieser Tanks die Kühlung ausfiel, nahm die Katastrophe vor Fünfzig Jahren ihren Lauf.
Viele Arbeiter im Werk atmeten Plutonium ein und Radioaktive Abwässer wurden einfach in den Nahegelegenen Fluss "Tetscha" geleitet.
Die ahnungslosen Anwohner haben im verseuchten Wasser gebadet, ihre Gärten damit bewässert und sogar aus dem Fluss getrunken.
