Ekklesiast formed in Sweden in 2003 with Silenoz on vocals and guitar, Alastor on bass, and Draugen on drums. Their name comes from the Greek word for 'preacher,' which fits their tendency to work with religious themes in songs like 'Prophecy of Doom' and 'Destiny's End.'

They put out albums such as 'Sacred Verses of the Damned' in 2006 and 'Hymn to the Woeful Hearts' in 2009. The music is heavy and atmospheric, with Silenoz's vocals shifting between screams and quieter passages.

Some of their lyrics about despair and existence drew criticism, but they kept making the music they wanted to make. Other records include 'The End of the Beginning' from 2012 and 'Broken and Unbowed' from 2015.
