Ekz Statham formed in Brazil in the early 2000s, when four friends from childhood, Eduardo Mendes, Rafael Silva, Rodrigo Garcia, and Marcelo Mello, started playing small clubs and bars together. They built their sound by mixing rock, funk, samba, and reggae, with lyrics that often touched on social issues and personal experience.
Their breakthrough came with the single "Depois da Bulla," a song about the aftermath of a difficult relationship. Other tracks like "Importante" and "Ultimo Gucci" followed, helping establish their presence. Their debut album was called "Fatos Reais," and they later put out records titled "Verdades e Mentiras" and "Livre."
Along the way, they worked with artists like Manu Chao and Carlinhos Brown. Some of their lyrics drew criticism for being outspoken, but they kept writing what felt true to them. The band's catalog includes songs such as "God Bless" and "Money," which round out a body of work that stayed grounded in Brazilian rhythms and straightforward storytelling.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
