El Encendedor formed in Monterrey, Mexico, in the mid-1950s. The band's lineup included Santiago Jiménez on vocals and guitar, José María "Chema" González on bass, Arturo "El Cuate" Reyes on accordion, and Raúl "El Flaco" Cisneros on drums. They released their debut album, "El Encendedor con Alma," in 1966.
That album contained "Bye Bye Amor," the song that would define them. With Jiménez's emotive delivery and González's songwriting, it became an enduring hit. Other tracks like "Por amarte" and "Te Amo Te Extraño" followed a similar vein of heartfelt, melodic Latin music.
Internal conflicts and legal disputes over songwriting rights eventually led to González's departure in the 1970s. The band continued without him, but their output slowed. Decades later, a renewed interest in their catalog brought "Bye Bye Amor" back into circulation.
