El Nata formed in Callao, Peru in 1997, with Freddy "Chato" Cuadrado, Luis "Wicho" Cuadrado, Enrique "Quique" Cuadrado, and Enrique "Kike" Farro. The name came from their neighborhood and a local term for "friend." They started playing local bars and festivals, building a following with their cumbia sound.
In 2004, their debut album "Ven, Baila Conmigo" included the single "Como Olvidarte," which became a national hit. The band faced some criticism about their lyrics, but kept playing their style of cumbia. They later released albums like "Sentimiento Nacional" in 2006 and "Con Sabor a Cumbia" in 2008.
Other songs include "Mi Novia Y Yo" featuring Jeuri 27 and "Yo Voy a Llegar" with The Genius. Their music stayed rooted in Peruvian cumbia traditions while reaching a wider audience through those early recordings.
