El Suspenso formed in Santiago, Chile in the late 1980s with guitarist and vocalist Álvaro Henríquez, drummer Carlos Alomar, and bassist Mauricio Durán. Their debut album 'Equilibrio' came out in 1992, followed by records like 'Hola' in 1993 and 'Dulce Crisis' in 1995.
Henríquez's lyrics sometimes addressed social and political themes, which drew attention from various quarters. The band's song 'Guau' became particularly well-known for its emotional intensity.
By the late 1990s, the lineup had changed with Fernando Samalea and Francisco Durán joining after Alomar's departure. Keyboardist Juan Pablo Lopera came aboard in 2001.
