El Tecla formed in the 1980s from the merging of two bands, La Piojarra and El Pan Nuestro. The group included Antonio López on vocals, Javier Mas on guitar, Juan Valiente on bass, and Jorge Casillas on drums. Their sound pulled from punk and rock while keeping some Spanish traditional elements.
They put out albums like "El Rock en tu Idioma" in 1983, "Que Dios Reparta Suerte" in 1984, and "A Chillar a Otra Parte" in 1986. The title track from that last record became one of their most recognizable songs, along with others like "Amor de Chat" and "Conmigo No." Their lyrics often had a satirical edge and touched on social issues.
El Tecla's material sometimes drew criticism from authorities and conservative groups, which led to some venue bans and legal trouble. They kept writing and playing through it, though, and developed a following that appreciated their straightforward approach.
