El Tecolote formed in 1974 with José "Pepe" Maldonado on vocals and accordion, José Alfredo Rodríguez on bass, and Lauro Hernández on drums. They worked in the norteño style, playing corridos, rancheras, and ballads.
Their song "Nunca" became a well-known ballad about forbidden love. In 1990, Maldonado was arrested on drug trafficking allegations, but the band kept performing.
