El Tigrillo Palma formed in Monterrey, Nuevo León in the mid-1990s around frontman José Luis Almanza, who had been playing accordion on the streets. Their debut album 'Tigrillo Palma' came out in 2000, mixing corridos with norteño and pop touches.
Their 2005 song 'El 24' became their most recognizable track, a ballad about lost love that stuck around in Mexican music. They followed it with albums like 'El Querido' in 2009, and other songs like 'Fiesta En La Sierra' and 'Con Que Me Pagas' kept their sound in circulation.
In 2006, Almanza was arrested on drug charges, which paused the band's work for a while. After his release, they kept recording despite some criticism, maintaining their place in regional Mexican music without much fanfare about comebacks or reinventions.
