El Wachón formed in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the late 1990s around vocalist Nelson "El Wachón" Ruiz and his brother. Their 2002 single "Dale Dale" became a breakout hit, driven by Ruiz's energetic vocals and the band's straightforward salsa arrangements.
They followed with albums like "Pa' Que Se Goce" in 2004 and "Estamos Aquí" in 2009. Songs like "Pla Pla Pla" and "Si Nos Organizamos" kept their sound anchored in danceable salsa rhythms without much of the genre-blending sometimes mentioned in their descriptions.
El Wachón worked with established salsa figures including Gilberto Santa Rosa, Victor Manuelle, and Tito Nieves. In 2010, Ruiz served a brief jail sentence after an arrest for drug possession, which interrupted their momentum for a time.
