Eld

Eld formed in Fredrikstad, Norway in 1998, with Peter Broderick on vocals and guitar, Inge Børseth on keyboards, Inge Rypdal on bass, and Håkon Mjåset Johansen on drums. They started putting out albums that year, beginning with their self-titled debut. Their sound had a progressive rock base but pulled in folk and ambient textures, which didn't fit neatly into mainstream channels at the time.

Their track "At Daylight's End" became a particular touchstone for listeners. Other songs like "My Withering Self" and "Wartime Symphonies" showed their range, from personal reflection to broader, more atmospheric pieces. They kept releasing records fairly steadily, with albums like Sodium in 2000, Likferd in 2002, and Opiate in 2013.

Broderick's vocals and guitar work, along with Børseth's keyboard layers, remained central through various lineup shifts. They built a following that appreciated their particular blend, which felt rooted in a certain Nordic sensibility without being overtly folkloric. The band put out another self-titled album in 2019.
